If you follow my Tumblr, you might be thinking, “what happened to that Louis CK art I saw a few months ago?”
I dug it out this week hoping to finish it off in time for some upcoming festivals. It nearly had me stumped for a second time, but I think I’ve solved it finally.
Here is a progress shot of the tiny section I’ve been staring at for the past 8 hours.
Not my usual Tumblr content, but I’ve been in hiding for weeks working on a commission for an advertising firm who wanted its logo interpreted into five different paintings for the office. They turned out well, considering the only two elements I had to work with were the company’s Ampersand logo and the “1974” year of establishment.
Each is 30”x30” and will occupy an expanse of wall in the firm’s Tulsa location.
I picked up six new commissions last week, so I’m going to be away doing busy work for a while. I will leave something good on the way out, though.
My Wes Anderson/Fantastic Mr. Fox portrait is at the printer, and I’ll probably release it on Good Friday. Check back for the link.
Above: current canvas for the first commission.

Only By Night
Jeff Mitchell, 2012
I have a new piece of art added to my shop. I was making a conscious decision to stray from portraits, when I realized that I just painted a portrait of the moon. I associate the night with mystery, excitement and creativity. So much of my art/writing was created in the night, so I guess this painting is an homage to my partner in crime, the moon.
I’ve been stuck for nearly two straight weeks in the world of commissions (a.k.a. bill pay), and I’m feeling pretty backed up. Luckily (inevitably), I finished my illustration and have a few free days before I start the next one.
As is my custom, I ripped out a new piece in just two days, and I’ll have prints next week.
